Nexus 5, Motorola’s turn at last?

The Nexus smartphone lineup has seen manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, and LG work together with Google in order to create smartphones in line with Google’s vision of Android. No carrier bloatware or OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) software. The Nexus lineup hence runs on stock Android and receives the latest updates of Android before any other smartphone or tablet. With the LG Nexus 4 being such a success, this year we are poised to see a new Nexus smartphone apparently made by Motorola.

Ever since Google acquired Motorola for 12.5 billion dollars, fans expected a Nexus phone from the two – but that union never came about. However, a recent leak from Taylor Winberley – who has the inside scoop on everything Motorola – seemingly points to a new Nexus from Motorola. Taking to Google+, he posted:

“Motorola will release a Nexus smartphone in Q4 (that is not the Moto X).”

Nearly, all of his leaks regarding Motorola have proved to be correct in the past, so we would not discard this as leak bogus. Moreover, LG has categorically denied any involvement with the Nexus 5, but instead, they confirmed that they are working on an Android tablet instead.

The Nexus 5 is expected to use a Qualcomm SOC, the Snapdragon 800 series chipset clocked in at 2.3 GHz. This is a monstrous quad-core CPU with a formidable Adreno 330 GPU, which, in the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, crushed even the likes of the Exynos 5450 Octa in the Galaxy S4. Furthermore, the display is supposed to be a 1920×1080 LCD display. It will also feature 4G LTE connectivity. Expandable memory is still questionable.

If Motorola pulls this off, then the Nexus lineup will get another affordable phone with killer features. Motorola, which has Google Play Editions of its phones coming up next, finally has its chance in the limelight if the rumors prove to be true. The challenge will be to create a phone with high-end specifications for mid-end consumers.
